Our Projects & Events

In addition to the Landcare Nursery and Pest Control initiatives, throughout the year South Kaipara Landcare undertakes a range of projects in the community to protect and restore the South Head environment.

  • Planting

A favourite amongst our members is the planting days at Te Rau Puriri Regional Park and the Marie Neverman Wetland - Native Forest Restoration Trust. 80 plus volunteers help in the planting of up to 2000 trees and enjoy a BBQ afterwards.

  • Fencing

Over the years, Landcare has undertaken some major projects. Projects of note include the construction of the layby at Slater Road, fencing around wetlands, fencing Rototoa Reserve as well as the cutting down wilding pines.

  • Weeding

Landcare has an ongoing objective to rid South Head road of the invasive weed, Woolly Nightshade - keep a lookout for our small but dedicated crew who can often be spotted beavering away on the roadside along South Head Road.

Roadside Clean Up

Every spring, Landcare pulls together over 100 locals to collect roadside rubbish from South Head Rd and the main side roads, on the peninsula (in total over 50km of road). Teams of landowners come together to ‘clean up’ their section of road and the day concludes with a BBQ lunch at the local school and a chance to catch up with friends and neighbours.

  • Advocacy

Landcare has a long history of advocating for the local environment with Council and DoC. This has included studies on pest weeds and a current project on the removal of pest fish from Lake Rototoa.

  • Support

Landcare supports other groups and projects including the Birds NZ Annual Dabchick count and we are supporting Christina Norton of South Kaipara Clean Ups with her regular community clean ups of Muriwai Beach.

  • Flora & Fauna Guide

Landcare is currently working with Auckland Council to publish a flora and fauna guide for South Head residents. This guide will highlight the many things that are special to South Head.

  • It's not all hard work

Landcare always finds time for family picnics, water-ski days, site visits to other programs as well as community dinners and a few refreshments at the end of a hard working-bee.
